Job Description:

Work environment: Remote

Position Overview

Hammehr invites applications for the role of vCIO on behalf of our client for a full-time permanent opportunity.

Our client is a Western Canadian IT consulting and managed services firm that helps organizations plan, implement, and manage business technology. The vCIO serves as a senior technology advisor to client leadership teams, connecting business strategy with technology decisions, investment priorities, and long-term planning.

This position calls for someone who understands technology through the lens of business leadership. Rather than concentrating on individual systems or technical solutions, you'll examine how an organization's technology supports its operations, where it creates risk or limits progress, and what should change. That includes developing coherent technology strategies and explaining recommendations to CEOs, Boards, and other senior decision-makers.

The work combines executive advisory, technology roadmap development, business analysis, and ongoing client relationship management. You'll collaborate with Business Analysts, Architects, Engineers, IT Managers, and delivery teams to turn strategic direction into practical plans. The position reports to the Director, Client Services and follows a 40-hour workweek, with occasional after-hours availability.

What You'll Do

  • Advise CEOs, Boards, and senior leadership teams on how technology investments, operating models, and modernization priorities can support their business objectives
  • Develop and maintain client technology strategies and roadmaps that connect current systems, business requirements, financial considerations, operational risks, and future priorities
  • Lead executive planning discussions, presenting recommendations and explaining investment options, dependencies, risks, and trade-offs in business terms
  • Assess client environments and business processes, working with Business Analysts and technical specialists to translate discovery findings into practical technology plans
  • Help clients establish technology governance, decision-making responsibilities, planning cycles, and clear accountability for strategic priorities
  • Identify emerging risks, infrastructure lifecycle needs, security concerns, and opportunities for improvement before they become urgent business problems
  • Coordinate with Account Executives, Architects, Project Managers, and managed services teams to connect strategic recommendations with project planning and operational delivery
  • Build lasting advisory relationships through regular roadmap reviews, documented decisions, informed recommendations, and consistent follow-through

Basic Qualifications

  • Previous internal IT leadership experience at the Director or CIO level, including responsibility for organizational technology direction, business alignment, and investment priorities
  • Demonstrated experience developing technology strategies and roadmaps that translate business objectives, current-state assessments, and operational constraints into actionable recommendations
  • Experience presenting strategic technology recommendations to CEOs, Boards, or comparable executive stakeholders, including explaining complex decisions and trade-offs in clear business language
  • Broad understanding of enterprise technology, including IT governance, cybersecurity, cloud, infrastructure, business applications, modernization, and operational service delivery
  • Legally authorized to work in Canada, with professional proficiency in spoken and written English, a valid driver's licence, access to a vehicle, and the ability to travel occasionally for business purposes

Preferred Qualifications

  • 10+ years of relevant experience spanning IT leadership, technology strategy, consulting, managed services, or business technology planning
  • Practical business analysis experience, including requirements discovery, business process assessment, stakeholder interviews, and translating business needs into technology recommendations
  • Experience advising multiple organizations in an IT consulting, professional services, or managed services environment
  • Experience facilitating executive planning workshops, governance reviews, technology assessments, or recurring strategic advisory engagements
  • Experience identifying and developing consulting or technology service opportunities based on documented client needs, strategic priorities, and operational constraints

The Challenges

  • You'll advise multiple organizations, each with its own business objectives, technology maturity, financial constraints, and decision-making processes. Roadmaps will need to evolve as those circumstances change
  • Executive stakeholders may have competing priorities or incomplete information. Recommendations need to be commercially sensible, technically credible, and clear enough for leaders to act on
  • You won't personally deliver every recommendation. Maintaining alignment between client leadership, business analysis, technical specialists, account teams, and delivery functions requires ongoing coordination. Occasional after-hours availability may also be necessary

Your Impact

  • Client leadership teams have clearer technology priorities, practical roadmaps, and a stronger basis for making investment, modernization, and governance decisions
  • Technology risks, operational dependencies, and lifecycle concerns are identified earlier, allowing clients to make more deliberate decisions about timing, resources, and business exposure
  • Strategic recommendations are more consistently translated into accountable plans, coordinated delivery activities, and measurable business objectives
